As a 2nd grade teacher, I love using the Fundations Level 2 Phonics curriculum to build strong decoding and spelling skills. But I also know my students need extra practice applying those skills in real reading. That’s where the Fluency and Comprehension Passages from Learning with Lopes make all the difference.
These passages are written to align directly with the Fundations Level 2 scope and sequence. When my students are working on glued sounds, vowel teams, or tricky multisyllabic words, I can pull out a passage that reinforces those exact patterns in context. Instead of practicing rules in isolation, students read authentic text that builds both fluency and comprehension.
What I love most about these passages is the built-in differentiation. Every set includes versions that work for students who are confidently reading on grade level, as well as options for reluctant readers who need more support. The texts are shorter and more accessible for strugglers, while still offering challenge and depth for those ready to stretch. This allows all students to participate in the same lesson, while getting the level of practice that meets their needs.
The passages also include comprehension questions that range from basic recall to higher-level thinking. Students are not only practicing accuracy, expression, and pace, but also strengthening their ability to understand and discuss what they’ve read. Repeated readings make it easy to track growth and celebrate small wins, which motivates even my most hesitant readers.
Most importantly, these passages are engaging. They feature kid-friendly stories and informational topics that capture students’ interest, making fluency practice feel purposeful and fun.
If you’re teaching Fundations Level 2, these differentiated passages from Learning with Lopes are the perfect supplemental tool to help every 2nd grader grow in confidence and skill.
